We are moving, hopefully for the last time. My thanks to Traci Parsons who has worked so hard to move these pages and give them a new look and complete make over. She is a wonderful friend and I am extremely grateful for her hours of hard work.

Moving is a long and difficult process. Hopefully the Sixteenth site will follow shortly to the new address. My thanks for your patience, remember to bookmark the new address. This site will remain but will no longer be updated.

The delays and off time with Geocites and Tripod, I cannot control, but the sites will continue. I thank all of you for your support and kindness to me. I had no idea. Again my thanks, steve

Sam Davis is currently writing a book about the Third Battalion. It will appear as part of the great series Mac Wyckoff, Jim Clary, and others like Sam are doing on Kershaw's Brigade. If you have biographical information, photos, letters, diaries, or stories of this unit, PLEASE contact Sam and share it with him. He is a great guy and is going to produce a great book.

Army of Tennessee

Formed late in the war, this unit was organized from Union prisoners of war for defense against Sherman. General Mercer of Georgia sent several of these men to the gallows for mutiny and an attempt was made after the war to try him.

The unit was disbanded and some felt that the early attention given to southern prisoner of war camps directly relates to attempts to explain away the decisions of these men.

(COMMANDING OFFICERS)
LT. COLONEL J. HAMPTON BROOKS

Brooks' Foreign Battalion
Brooks' Battalion Regular Infantry
It was formed with prisoners from the Florence Stockade in Oct 1864, under the command of Major J. Hampden Brooks, formerly captain of Co. G, 7th SC Infantry. The company commanders were as follows:

Co. A, CPT Vincent F. Martin, formerly 1LT, Co. C, 1st (Butler's) SC Infantry, (1st SC Regulars)

Co. B, CPT John C. Minott, formerly 2LT, Co. G, (1st Butler's SC Infantry,1st SC Regulars)

Co. C, CPT Lewis Alfred Wardlaw, formerly 1SG, Co. B, 1st(Orr's) SC Rifles

Co. D, CPT B. G. Pinckney, formerly 1LT, Co. B, (2d SC Sharpshooters)

Co. E, CPT Eldred J. Simkins, formerly 1LT, Co. H, (1st Butler's SC Infantry, 1st SC Regulars)

The battalion camped and drilled at Summerville, and in December, Brooks took detachments from Co's. A, B, C, and D to Savannah. After being in the lines for a few days, the men began to desert, and nearly mutinied, with the result that on 18 Dec 1864, Gen. Hardee ordered them all sent back to the Florence Stockade.
