Please follow this link. We are moving, hopefully for the last time. My thanks to Traci Parsons who has worked so hard to move these pages and give them a new look and complete make over. She is a wonderful friend and I am extremely grateful for her hours of hard work. Moving is a long and difficult process. Hopefully the Sixteenth site will follow shortly to the new address. My thanks for your patience, remember to bookmark the new address. This site will remain but will no longer be updated. steve |

Co. A, The second Captain listed as A.B. Boykin is incorrect, it was Alexander H. Boykin and his unit was also called the Boykin Rangers but not the "Boykin Mounted Rangers". Co. B, Thomas E. Screven commanded the Beaufort District Troop, not to my knowledge ever referred to as the "Beaufort Detachment" Co. C, The second Captain's name listed is misspelled, it is Meighan not "Mieghan". The first Captain was actually Thomas Taylor, the troop was previously designated as Co. D of the Hampton Legion cavalry battalion. The name "Hampton Detachment" as mentioned is really not correct. I have never heard them referred to as "Congaree Mounted Riflemen" just as the Congaree Troop. Co. E, In case you are interested in first names, it was Alvin H. Dean Co. F, William K. Easley was succeeded as Captain by John Westfield Co. H, The Captain was James P. McFie not J.E. McFie Co K, John F. Lanneau commanded the Brooks Troop (which was originally an infantry unit known as the "University Riflemen" of Furman). The were designated as Co. B of the Hampton Legion cavalry battalion. With reference to Co.s B, C, I, and K, I would suggest listing their nicknames as "(Beaufort District Troop/Congaree Troop/Edgefield Hussars/Brooks Troop), (Co. C/Co. D/Co. A/Co. B), Hampton Legion Cavalry Battalion" For additional reading I would also recommend: Boykin, Richard - Captain Alexander Hamilton Boykin Wells, Edward - Hampton and His Cavalry in '64 Griffin, James B.: A Gentleman And An Officer: A Military and Social History of J.B. Griffin's Civil War, edited by McArthur and Burton Contact Ron who was kind enough to provide the above information on the Second S.C. Cav. and the Hampton Legion |
