* On the list of companies you have on the 8th SCI, Company M is lead by a "T.E. Howie". I have seen this misspelling in D. Augustus Dickert's History of Kershaw's Brigade. This company was actually captained by T.E. Howle originally (Thomas Epaphroditus Howle, an ancestor of mine). T.E. was first Lt. in Co. F in the 8th, and later captain. Co. F was nicknamed "The Darlington Grays", and they enlisted for one year. After 1st Manassas, T.E. returned home on a 45-day furlough to raise another unit (per act of the Confederate Congress). He was able to get about 85-90 men to enlist and returned to Virginia. These men became Co. M, 8th SCI.

Capt. Howle was killed near the Dunker Church at Sharpsburg. After the war, his brothers (who seved in the same unit), returned him home to be buried in the old Black Creek Cemetary north of Darlington. The Pee Dee Rifles Camp of the S.C.V. still maintain his grave.

FYI: Capt. J.H. Muldrow of Co.A was killed at Malvern Hill; Capt. J.K. McIver was mortally wounded at Gettysburg and captured shortly afterward at Williamsport, MD. He died some 100 days after being wounded; Maj. D.McD. McLeod was killed at Gettysburg; and Lt. Col. A.J. Hoole was killed at Chickamauga.

* Longstreet in his book, From Manassas to Appomattox cites this unit, as well as the 3rd battalion (Rice) and the 15th S.C.V. as being with Kershaw's Brigade, other sources cite these units as attached to Barksdale's Brigade.
