We are moving, hopefully for the last time. My thanks to Traci Parsons who has worked so hard to move these pages and give them a new look and complete make over. She is a wonderful friend and I am extremely grateful for her hours of hard work.

Moving is a long and difficult process. Hopefully the Sixteenth site will follow shortly to the new address. My thanks for your patience, remember to bookmark the new address. This site will remain but will no longer be updated.

The delays and off time with Geocites and Tripod, I cannot control, but the sites will continue. I thank all of you for your support and kindness to me. I had no idea. Again my thanks, steve

Cavalry Battalions

Cavalry was first formed at the squadron level and then as the war progressed moved into battalion sized units. Most of the battalions were absorbed into the seven major regiments by January, 1863.

In the Confederacy, mounted men furnished the mount they used. As the war ground to a close and more and more men were dismounted the Butler Brigade formed The Stud Horse Battalion to use these men as an effective dismounted unit. Little known, these men fought as infantry and were buried as "troopers."

A.C. Earle's Company

Earle’s Company was enlisted from Greenville, Anderson, and Pickens, South Carolina. The fought with General W.E. Jones in West Virginia and supported General Longstreet in November of 1863 in East Tennessee. (UD1/39) During this time the unit was associated with the 37th Virginia Cavalry. The unit returning to service around the Salt Works near Wytheville, Virginia, I am especially interested in their operations in this area. I am seeking additional information on the service of this unit and would appreciate any information you might be willing to share.

Rosters and partial rosters also survive for a number of odd cavalry companies, including the following:

A.W. Cordes' Company
Theodore Cordes' Company
A.C. Earle's Company
Kirk's Partisan Ranger Company
State Troops-Rodger Company
Rutledge's Company
Simon's Company
Rutledge Mounted Riflemen and Horse Artillery
Tucker's Company

Can you help, with more information, will you?batsonsm@bellsouth.net
